If Someone Wants 'A Blue Instagram Check, I Don't Want Them,' 'Temptation Island' Producer Says

Every season, viewers have strong opinions about the cast members of "Temptation Island," whether it's one of the four couples who arrive on the show to test their relationship or one of the many, uh, tempting singles who live beside them. But how exactly are these cast members selected? What's the magic ingredient the production team looks for? USA Insider digital correspondent Stephanie Gomulka spoke with executive producer Trifani Williams as well as casting director, Doran Ofir, to learn how they determine who is the right fit for "Temptation Island."

"What's really important to me as a showrunner and just all the producers and everyone involved as a whole, is that this is a dating show that is really unlike any other, where it's more than just about dating. It's about being at a crossroads in your relationship, which also, for us, is about going deeper than 'Why are you and your boyfriend or girlfriend not getting along right now?' It's more about, 'What got you to this point in a relationship where you feel like you have to test what's going on, or that there's something missing, or what more do you need?' So when we're casting, it's really important for us to find couples that have layers ... We take that very seriously. If you don't come out a changed person, then we didn't do our jobs," Williams told Gomulka. 

When it comes to what they're looking for on the show, authenticity is key. They want to weed out anyone whose only goal is to be famous, Williams emphasized.

"The very first thing I tell [Ofir] is, if it looks like somebody is coming on the show to get a blue Instagram check, I don't want them, because I take it very seriously. And we pour a lot into this show. So if you're coming to play games, this isn't the show for that," she said.

Another important quality in potential cast members? They should understand the ultimate goal of the show: growth.

"For me, diversity is important. Telling stories that haven't been told is important. Seeing couples that you haven't seen yet is very important. The way people are looking at their relationships is very important," Williams explained, with Ofir adding, "This isn't a show about hookups. This is a show about longevity or upgrading and finding out who you are. Because even the singles live in a better version of themselves."

As for what will happen next season, Williams was able to tease some exciting new developments.

"Well, I can tell you we're very close to having the show's cast. We have some stories that we're telling we've never told before, so there's some newness there that's very exciting for us. And I think at the end of the day, we are always striving to cast people who feel relatable. They're going to be pretty people. That's always going to happen. We like attractive people, but we like people with stories. Our show is about telling people's stories and without that, nothing matters. So, yeah, we're very close to locking everything in and I think we're really excited about the new couples coming on ... we're always trying to see something new, tell a different story in a relationship, and we're definitely going to do that this season," Williams concluded.
