Ric Flair Wants One More Match in WWE
"The Nature Boy" admits he's mulling ending his self-imposed retirement from pro wrestling at age 74! But who would he face in the ring at his age?
It's official. There are now three certainties in life: Death, taxes, and Ric Flair wanting to wrestle one more match.
"The Nature Boy" made headlines earlier this week when he declared that he has the itch to get back in the ring one more time – again. This news comes despite Flair competing in the much-publicized "Ric Flair's Last Match" in July 2022, officially marking his retirement from pro wrestling once again (since his original retirement match at WrestleMania 24 against Shawn Michaels proved to, well, not be a retirement at all).
At 74 years old, Ric Flair has arguably had a greater career than any WWE Superstar in history, and when you're a living legend like he is, wrestling is in your blood. After all, it can be hard to walk away when you feel you still have so much more to give to the industry. Flair made his intentions to wrestle again crystal clear during a recent appearance on the Insight with Chris Van Vliet podcast.
Who Does Ric Flair Want to Wrestle in 2023?
"I want to wrestle again right now," Flair confessed. "Isn't it crazy? I feel like Ricky Morton, the guy that I should have chosen for my last match, would have been great. Ricky Morton is still wrestling."
Ricky Morton, one-half of the legendary WWE Hall of Fame tag team, the Rock' n' Roll Express, had many battles against Ric Flair throughout the 80s. A particularly bloody affair inside a steel cage at Great American Bash 1986 comes to mind when an old-school fan thinks of Flair and Morton. So, while it remains to be seen whether or not Flair is actually considering a return to the ring, it's heartwarming to think that he would like to clash one last time against one of his most memorable opponents!
It did seem strange that his final match in 2022 involved Jeff Jarrett, Jay Lethal, and Andrade El Idolo, three men whom Flair never really crossed paths with over his illustrious career (although Andrade is married to his daughter Charlotte). A traditional one-on-one bout with a fellow legend Flair is intimately familiar with would seem more apropos for a de facto retirement match, doesn't it?
What Does Ric Flair Miss Most About Wrestling?
However, pushing aside the prospect of stepping into the ring again, Flair was quick to admit he misses the training aspect of it all, as he credits his workouts for staying in shape far into his elder years.
"You know what the best thing for me about [his 2022 "final match"] was that I forced myself to really get in shape," Flair revealed. "I've heard this from guys over the years. And when they were older, I was like, in my prime. The older guys would say 'Man, I'm tired of working out.' And there gets a time when you just get bored working out – you don't have a goal. I mean, they gave me a goal and I just attacked it. I didn't stop drinking or anything but I was training, literally training three hours a day, five days a week in the ring, or I was doing the sled, the ropes. Yeah, I got my bench press up for two and a quarter. I mean, so from being dead to all that was pretty cool."
Flair's workout regime is the stuff of legends – and yes, it's beyond belief that he can bench press 225 pounds after nearly dying from heart and kidney issues that hospitalized him for weeks in 2017.
Does Ric Flair Want Charlotte Flair to Break His World Title Record?
Whenever the subject of Ric Flair is brought up, it's inevitable that the topic eventually turns to his daughter, Charlotte. The elder Flair (along with John Cena) holds the record for most world titles won in history with 16. Charlotte sits at 14 world championships, and many in the WWE Universe are counting down the days when Charlotte not only ties her father's record but surpasses it. Unsurprisingly, Flair thinks Charlotte overtaking him would be huge for WWE.
"I certainly hope it happens," Flair revealed. "I don't know what they're doing right now. But who knows? It's got to happen. It'd be the biggest thing in the business. If they're really interested in doing something – because I feel like the women have had more empowerment right now than they ever had."
Flair doesn't just think his daughter is destined to break his record, but "The Nature Boy" thinks a passing-of-the-torch moment involving himself and John Cena would justifiably send the WWE Universe into a frenzy.
"John Cena and I talked about all of this," he explained. "Can you imagine us walking down and congratulating Charlotte? What kind of rating would that get on TV, to see that finally happen? I mean, I think it's the biggest thing they could do right now."
We'd put our money on Charlotte breaking her father's record sooner rather than later. In our eyes, it's just a matter of time. But like many in the WWE Universe, we're more interested in Ric Flair breaking his own record of most matches wrestled after retirement.
