Rey Mysterio To Guest Star In Upcoming Netflix Wrestling Film 'Against The Ropes'
Based on his current family matters in WWE, Mysterio is perfect for the role!
We interrupt USA Insider’s continuous coverage of the 2023 Royal Rumble with some exciting news: Rey Mysterio has been polishing his acting chops lately, and he’s set to appear in the Netflix film “Against the Ropes,” starring Caraly Sánchez, Scarlet Gruber, and Carmen Ramo.
The movie premieres on Jan. 25, just three days before the Royal Rumble kicks off the Road to WrestleMania in San Antonio, Texas. In “Against the Ropes,” Mysterio serves as a Lucha libre mentor for the main character, a mother who has just returned from prison only to discover her daughter doesn’t respect her anymore. Naturally, she turns to the world of wrestling to prove her love to her daughter:
We know Rey Mysterio almost certainly filmed his scenes months ago, but the film’s plot is already drawing similarities to what the Mysterio clan is dealing with each week on Monday Night RAW. After all, Rey’s son Dominic was just released from prison a few weeks ago due to Dom and Rhea Ripley crashing the Mysterio family Christmas party, and based on the stories he told this past Monday on MizTV, he must’ve spent the holidays locked up in a maximum security facility:
That sure sounds rough for poor Dom. Prison must’ve been the worst. (Or maybe he and the rest of the Judgment Day have binged too many Season 3 episodes of "The Office" on Peacock lately, who knows? We were sensing some strong “Prison Mike” vibes from Dom! And apparently, Miz feels the same.)
While the father-son feud that has surrounded Rey and Dominic is still threatening to push the two Mysterio men further and further apart, the WWE Universe can only assume everything will eventually end up in an in-ring confrontation of some sort. When that happens is anybody’s guess, but we’d be lying if we said we’re wondering what would happen if they find themselves in the Royal Rumble at the exact same time.
Until that moment happens, maybe a movie like “Against the Ropes” could serve as an olive branch between Rey and Dominic. What better way to relax before the Royal Rumble on Jan. 28 than taking in a tale of an ex-convict who learns that the only way to regain the respect of her daughter is to compete inside a wrestling ring? Maybe Rhea, Priest, and Finn can join in as well and let bygones be bygones.
… No, that’s never going to happen. Not at this point. Maybe one day there'll be a time when Rey and his son can peacefully coexist, but for now, Dominic just has to learn how to attend family functions without being tossed into the back of a police car.
Keep up with all things WWE Universe on Peacock.
