Will 'Burn Notice' Ever Return? Here's What The Cast And Creator Have Said

It’s been almost a decade since the final episode of the USA Network hit series “Burn Notice,” but its diehard fans are as eager as ever to see the characters back in action, saving the little guy in a way only master spies know how. Is a revival an actual possibility? 

Those who tuned into the series finale know that the story was left pretty open-ended [SPOILER ALERT]: After getting drawn into the web of a new villain in the seventh and final season, Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) made the choice to save his friends rather than continue fighting for his life in the world of espionage. After faking the deaths of himself and his girlfriend, Fiona Glenanne (Gabrielle Anwar), the duo finally fled Miami to an undisclosed location that’s very likely Ireland, where they first fell in love. 

There, it is shown that Michael and Fiona are living in seclusion raising his nephew, Charlie. Meanwhile, their best friends Sam Axe (Bruce Campbell) and Jesse Porter (Coby Bell) are biding their time for the day their friends come out of hiding and they reunite. They’re not alone: Fans are waiting for that day too and have been since 2013.

Sadly, so far there has been no official headway on getting the band back together for one more adventure. However, that doesn’t mean there’s no hope. Shortly after the series ended, creator Matt Nix told Entertainment Weekly that he left the story open for this exact reason. However, he needs to make sure the reason for the show’s return is a solid one. 

“I would love to do it. It would have to be something that made sense dramatically,” he explained. “I don't think we would want to do something trivial after we brought the series to a close in a particular way, but I think there are ways around that so, at the same time, no matter what you do, it's never the same experience as making the series itself.”

However, speaking to UPROXX in 2019, Donovan said he had an idea for a reunion movie that he actually pitched to Nix. 

“People who watched the show know that we escaped to Ireland and raised my brother’s son as our own,” he told the outlet. “I would be interested to catch up with where their lives are at this point. I have spoken with [creator] Matt Nix about it and he likes the idea. I have spoken to Bruce [Campbell] and he loves the idea.”

Campbell, who previously starred in the "Burn Notice" spinoff movie "The Fall of Sam Axe," teased that there was some minor movement on a “Burn Notice” return later that year as well. 

“New stuff is always my favorite, but I would definitely do ‘Brisco Rides Again,’ and I would definitely do more ‘Burn Notice,’” the “Evil Dead” icon told the San Antonio Current. “We’re sort of circling the building now with ‘Burn Notice.’ Maybe it’s time to save the world again. The world needs us.” 

Sadly, that was three years ago and nothing official has come up. Still, if Michael Westen taught us anything, it’s that nothing is impossible if you’re clever, relentless, and have enough duct tape and yogurt.

After all, other USA Network series have seen new life in post-finale movies.

In the meantime, the cast has stayed busy. Bell has continued his TV career with recurring roles in shows like “The Gifted,” “Archer,” and “Walker.” Anwar had a lengthy stint on “Once Upon A Time.” Campbell, of course, reprised his role as Ash Williams for three seasons of “Ash Vs. Evil Dead.” 

As for Donovan, in true Westen fashion, he remained quite busy with roles in “Sicario,” “Fargo,” “Shut Eye,” and can now be seen as Detective Frank Cosgrove on NBC’s “Law & Order.”
