Becky Lynch Becomes a WWE Women's Grand Slam Champion – But What Does That Mean?
After defeating Tiffany Stratton for the NXT Women's Title, Becky Lynch takes her place in the WWE history books as a Grand Slam Champion.
For the second time in less than two months, a WWE Superstar from the main roster has shocked the world by capturing an NXT Championship.
Following Dominik Mysterio's footsteps, who famously won the NXT North American Title in July, Becky Lynch did the unthinkable on the September 12 edition of NXT: She went down to Orlando and dethroned a long-running champion. We don't know if the main roster Superstars in WWE are getting bored on Raw and SmackDown, but it sure seems like the NXT champions have targets on their back lately!
Who Did Becky Lynch Defeat to Become NXT Women's Champion?
The WWE Universe was surprised when Becky Lynch announced her intentions to challenge Tiffany Stratton for the NXT Women's Championship. This type of "skip the line" behavior isn't usually seen – nor encouraged – in modern WWE. Still, Tiffany saw Becky's sudden challenge as an opportunity to cement herself as the strongest and most capable champion NXT has seen in a long time. Unfortunately, Tiffany didn't cement anything; she let it slip away.
After a breathtaking sprint of a match that saw neither woman slow down at any point, The Man secured the victory after her patented Manhandle Slam finishing move. After a quick count of three, it was made official: Tiffany Stratton's impressive 100-day run as NXT Women's Champion was over. Savvy WWE fans know that winning the NXT Women's Championship has been a dream for Becky ever since she arrived on the scene in the summer of 2014.
The Man finally captured the championship that seemed impossible to win throughout her career. Of course, true to form, Becky let the smack talk fly after the match, referencing that her real-life family is "full of champions."
"Me and Seth Rollins, we're both champions," she proclaimed to the WWE digital team. "Look at us, controlling the business."
Becky isn't wrong; her real-life husband Seth Rollins is currently enjoying a lengthy reign as WWE World Heavyweight Champion on Monday nights, and common sense says that the power couple will get even stronger – and cockier – in the coming days once Becky settles into her NXT Women's Title reign. But, interestingly enough, it's the way that Becky described herself that is most intriguing to the WWE Universe. In her post-match comments, the new champion coined herself the Grand Slam Man, a nickname that alludes to her historic title win.
By capturing the NXT Women's Championship, Becky Lynch has become only the sixth Grand Slam Champion in WWE women's division history.
What Does Becoming WWE Women's Grand Slam Champion Mean?
Becoming a Grand Slam Champion truly means ascending to the top of the mountain in WWE – there's a reason why only six women can boast having this particular accolade! Being a Grand Slam Champion means you've held the NXT Women's Championship, WWE Women's Championship, and Women's World Championship at least once. (Remember that the last two championships were known as the Raw and SmackDown Women's Titles, respectively, until June 2023). In the eyes of many in the WWE Universe, being a one-off champion is nothing compared to the recognition that comes with being a Grand Slam Champion.
In Becky's case, she won her initial Women's World Title on September 11, 2016, and her first WWE Women's Championship on April 7, 2019. Becky's NXT title victory has been four years in the making – we're just bummed that it had to come at the expense of Tiffany Stratton, one of the best young Superstars NXT has ever seen.
Don't worry, we're not concerned about Tiffany's WWE future, it's looking brighter than arguably any Superstar. At just 24 years old, Tiffany's best days are definitely ahead of her!
Who in NXT will step up to Becky in the coming weeks? Tiffany has a case for a rematch, but our money is on Roxanne Perez, who technically never lost the NXT Women's Championship back in the spring.
What Other WWE Superstars Besides Becky Lynch Are Grand Slam Champions?
With her victory over Tiffany Stratton, Becky Lynch finds herself surrounded by some of the all-time greatest WWE Superstars. She's officially the sixth woman to accomplish this feat, joining Charlotte Flair, Asuka, Sasha Banks, Bayley, and Rhea Ripley. Perhaps most shocking to the WWE Universe is that it took Becky so long to become a Grand Slam Champion!
It's taken Becky seven long years to become the Grand Slam Man, by far the longest of any current female Grand Slam Champion. Charlotte Flair accomplished the goal in just under three years, with the remaining four women taking no longer than five.
Regardless of how long it's taken her to achieve her goal, we stand with the WWE Universe in congratulating Becky Lynch on finally capturing the elusive NXT Women's Championship. What else is there to say? She's come a long way from the fresh-faced, Irish-jigging Superstar she was when she debuted in NXT many years ago.
Will the newly-crowned Grand Slam Man take her title to Monday Night Raw, or will the WWE Universe witness Becky Lynch take her talents down to South Florida for the foreseeable future? If Becky's latest message on social media is any indication, she will make her presence known in N-BEX-T for a bit!
In a way, it's fitting. Becky's wanted to be NXT Women's Champion for so long – why would she leave Orlando right after realizing her dream?
