It's the perfect time to reveal some SummerSlam hard facts to give an inside look at the most significant numbers in the event's history to date. In fact, it's time to ask yourself: Where does your favorite WWE Superstar stack up in the annals of SummerSlam history?
Who Has Been in the Most SummerSlam Matches Ever?
As far as longevity is concerned, there are two WWE Superstars no one else can touch, especially when it comes to being in the most SummerSlam matches ever and that's Randy Orton and The Undertaker. With an astonishing 16 matches under their belts, The Viper and The Dead Man have made careers out of dazzling the WWE Universe with countless memorable summertime matches.
Who can forget Randy Orton cashing in his Money in the Bank contract against a battered Daniel Bryan, fresh off a successful title defense against John Cena in 2013? What about his shocking victory over The Undertaker (thanks to timely interference from his father) at SummerSlam 2005? Of course, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention the bloody heap Randy Orton was left in after a shockingly brutal match against Brock Lesnar in 2016. Say what you want about The Viper, but he delivers at SummerSlam. It doesn't matter what decade it is, Randy Orton was made for events like this.
The Undertaker's SummerSlam resume is equally impressive. He once battled himself in an unforgettable clash in 1994 (yes, you read that correctly). He's also one of the only WWE Superstars ever to hold a submission victory over Brock Lesnar, as savvy members of the WWE Universe will never forget when Undertaker made The Beast pass out from the pain related to his brutal Hell's Gate hold in 2015.
Although 16 matches at The Biggest Party of the Summer is legitimately bonkers, a few other Superstars aren't far behind. John Cena is closest with 15 matches under his belt, with Edge (14) and Triple H (13) rounding out the list.
Who Has the Most Wins in SummerSlam History?
Edge is the winningest Superstar in SummerSlam history. No other active WWE Superstar comes close to matching Edge's record of 12 SummerSlam wins, a statistic that goes back to his SummerSlam debut in 1998.
Marc Mero, Dudley Boyz, Hardy Boyz, Lance Storm, Eddie Guerrero, Batista, Chris Jericho, John Cena, and Seth Rollins are just a few of the fantastic athletes Edge claims SummerSlam victories over. Although his record at the event is impressive, he nonetheless has two glaring losses. Not only was he memorably defeated by The Undertaker in a Hell in a Cell match at SummerSlam 2008, but he and long-time partner Christian failed in their bid to win a tag team turmoil match at SummerSlam 1999. (Hey, you can't win 'em all!)
If you're wondering if any active, full-time WWE Superstar is close to dethroning Edge as the all-time SummerSlam wins champion – the answer is no. The Undertaker (10 wins), Randy Orton (8), Triple H (8), and Bret Hart (7) are the closest competitors, which means Edge is likely to have this record for a long time.
Who's Main-Evented the Most Matches in SummerSlam History?
One larger-than-life Superstar has the enviable distinction of participating in the most main events in SummerSlam history: Brock Lesnar, with nine main events.
Nicknamed "Mr. SummerSlam" by countless wrestling fans and experts alike, Brock Lesnar is no stranger to the main event scene. If Brock isn't cracking open Randy Orton's skull, he's introducing Roman Reigns to his farm equipment. If he isn't defeating The Rock for his first WWE Championship, The Beast is taking The Undertaker to the limit. The man can do it all and unabashedly over-performs each time he steps through the ropes at SummerSlam.
(It remains to be seen if his rubber match with Cody Rhodes on August 5 is slotted for the main event, but if it is, Brock's SummerSlam main event count will go up to an even ten!)
Much like Edge's win count record, there doesn't seem to be any other WWE Superstar that will come close to matching Brock's main event record any time soon. His closest competitors are Randy Orton, The Undertaker, and John Cena, who have a measly five main events under their belts by comparison. Roman Reigns rounds out the pack with a solid four main events. But, judging by his title reign, would it really surprise anyone if Roman competes in five more SummerSlam main events over the next five years?
In the end, when you're as dominant an athlete as Lesnar, main-eventing mega-events like SummerSlam each year isn't just impressive – it's commonplace.
