Will There Be A 'White Collar' Revival? What The Cast And Creator Have Said

“White Collar” drew to a satisfying conclusion after six seasons in 2014, but like all great shows, it left the door open for the characters to return. The whole point of the series is that the chase between Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer) and Peter Burke (Tim DeKay) is never over. So, could they ever reunite for another “White Collar” adventure? 

That’s a complicated question thanks in large part to how the series ended. Expert con man Caffrey faked his own death to finally achieve his goal of the entire series: be free. However, he left just enough clues behind for Burke and his partner in crime, Mozzie (Willie Garson), to figure out he’s not really dead. 

The ending was quite satisfying and lets the viewer know the cat-and-mouse game between the two leads is not over, even if the show is. Speaking to TVLine shortly after the show ended, creator Jeff Eastin explained his mission in ending the show that way was not about setting up a movie or revival, though.

“I don’t want to rule anything out, but the ending really was for me not necessarily to say, ‘Hey, let’s go back and do another one,’ but really just to say that Peter will always keep chasing Neal and Neal will keep stealing things for as long as people care to wonder,” Eastin said at the time. 

He did not however, that there was immense fan demand at the time to have the characters ride again one last time. Meanwhile, the cast made sure to emphasize in an interview with Collider they would reprise their roles in a heartbeat if they were asked. However, they also wanted to respect the ending they helped craft.

“That’s a complicated question because you’re wrapping up so many things in such a short period of time,” Bomer said of the finale. “I was really satisfied, in some ways. In some ways, I would have been interested to explore other avenues, as well. I think there were still directions to go, but I think the way they wrapped it up was really well done, in the sense that they didn’t try to tie everything up in a nice bow. They really left some things open-ended and left a lot up the viewer’s imagination, which I always think is more potent than anything you could put down on a piece of paper.”

He added: “Honestly, if they came to us with the proposition, then I would definitely want to do it, just to get the chance to work with Tim, Willie [Garson], Marsha [Thomas], Sharif [Atkins] and Tiffani [Thiessen] again. But, I have no idea.”

DeKay, meanwhile, said he wouldn’t normally go for a revival, but that another show in the detective genre made him change his mind.

“I don’t know…In the past, I would have said no, I don’t see that being a possibility, but ‘Veronica Mars’ broke the mold with that. So, I’m not going to say that it would be impossible. I certainly would entertain that possibility. But right now, there aren’t any plans to have a movie. Gosh, that would be fun.”

Fast forward to 2020 and the feeling that a “White Collar” revival would be “fun” had not gone away. The cast even got back together for an unscripted discussion about the series to benefit the Trevor Project. With renewed attention on the show, Bomer and Eastin teased that they were in preliminary discussions to develop another project under the “White Collar” banner. 

Unfortunately, when he was interviewed about it later in the year, there had been no movement. 

“I wish there was something that I could tease you right now. I wish I had something really exciting to reveal to you. I do think it’s still just in conversation right now,” he told Entertainment Tonight at the time. 

Sadly, the next time the “White Collar” cast was in the news since then was to mourn the loss of one of their own. In 2021, Garson tragically died at age 57 of pancreatic cancer. Each of the stars took to social media to remember what it was like to work with him and noted what a profoundly sad thing it was to say goodbye to him.
