Don Mancini Teases 'Chucky' Musical Idea Similar To 'Hairspray'

“Chucky” creator Don Mancini has made it clear he wants the franchise to explore mediums beyond movies and television. Specifically, he’s got an idea for a stage musical starring none other than everyone’s favorite killer doll. 

Speaking with USA Insider at New York Comic Con, Mancini elaborated on comments he made during the show’s Season 2 panel about expanding the Chucky-verse with his “35 years’ worth of ideas” about the franchise. 

In addition to teasing his idea for an animated series or spinoff TV show, the creator discussed a live-action Broadway-style spectacle he’s been toying with in his head.

“I’ve also long wanted to do a stage musical of ‘Chucky,’” he revealed. “Specifically ‘Bride of Chucky,’ I think because that story is like a romantic love story that would lend itself particularly well to a stage musical.”

For those unfamiliar, “Bride of Chucky” is the fourth installment in the film franchise and introduced the world to Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany Valentine, Charles Lee Ray’s ex-girlfriend who brought him back to life in his infamous form of a Good Guy doll. Since then, Tiffany has been with the series both in the form of her own killer doll as well as actually inhabiting the body of an in-world Tilly. 

The movie sees the couple go from being on the rocks to falling back in love and even having their twins, Glen/Glenda. Because it’s a love story, Mancini said he wanted to blend the horror elements of Chucky with the romance and spectacle of a Broadway performance. Specifically, he said he wants the play to have a similar vibe to Marc Shaiman’s classic musical “Hairspray.” 

Fortunately for those who aren’t live theater fanatics, Mancini revealed he also has ideas to turn “Bride of Chucky” into its own TV show and is even considering a “parody of ‘The Simpsons’” animated show where Chucky and Tiffany live a classic sitcom lifestyle with one big exception. 

“Chucky and Tiffany raising Glen/Glenda, going to school, but their domestic problems all involve murder and burying bodies and stuff,” he said. 

However, as he mentioned during the “Chucky” panel at New York Comic Con, his ability to do more within the Chucky universe he created is all dependent on how much appetite there is from fans. So, he encourages everyone to tune into Season 2.
