'Why Doesn't Anyone Ever Talk About This?' Carmella Reveals She Suffered Miscarriage
The WWE Superstar has managed to turn negative into a positive by shining light on a struggle that isn’t usually talked about.
Tragedy has struck one of the most entertaining and beloved members of the WWE family. SmackDown Superstar Carmella — real name Leah Van Dale — announced on Monday that she had been in the hospital after being diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy.
The WWE Universe undoubtedly shares in the pain that Carmella is feeling. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants itself outside of the womb, causing potential severe health issues for the mother as well as affecting development of the egg into a baby.
Carmella posted a heartbreaking message directly from her verified Instagram account, breaking the news to her more than 3 million followers on the platform, while also acknowledging that she suffered an early miscarriage in September:
"I’ve gone back and forth with myself about posting this because I’m not looking for any sort of sympathy, but since today is the last day of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month, I wanted to share my story. Today, I was treated for an ectopic pregnancy. I never thought something like this would happen to me, especially after suffering from an early miscarriage in September. Nothing can prepare you for this news after getting a positive pregnancy test. I was cautiously optimistic this time around after the early loss I had already experienced, but was hoping for the best. I spent 12 hours in the ER on Saturday when I started experiencing some sharp pains on my left side. After several tests and ultrasounds, I was given the devastating news that this was, in fact, an abnormal pregnancy. The reason I’m sharing all of this is because in the moment it feels so isolating. Why doesn’t anyone ever talk about this? My husband and I watched @ilizas new comedy special last week and she spoke openly about her miscarriage. I immediately burst into tears. She went on to explain that we should be speaking more openly about this topic so we, as women, don’t blame ourselves and think there’s something wrong with us. I want to do the same. I’m part of this statistic and it’s happening to me. Again, I’m not looking for sympathy, I know I’ll eventually recover from all of this mentally, physically and emotionally. For anyone dealing with ANY type of pregnancy loss, I want you to know your feelings and emotions are valid, there is NOTHING wrong with you and you are not alone."
Although the one-time SmackDown Women’s Champion is reportedly well on the road to recovery, her Instagram message served as a rare glimpse of the harsh realities that exist behind the glitz and glamor of being a WWE Superstar. Bad times are just as impactful as the good times, and Carmella chose to share this painful moment with her family, friends, and fans around the world in part to promote awareness of ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages, and other types of pregnancy loss.
Approximately 1 million women experience pregnancy loss each year, according to statistics provided by the National Advocates for Pregnant Women.
Carmella and her new husband Corey Graves were looking forward to welcoming their first child into the world after marrying in April of this year. Carmella called it “the best day of my life” and the WWE Universe were treated to beautiful candid photos of her wedding day, as wrestling stars from around the world and across different promotions came together to celebrate their union.
USA Insider sends our warmest wishes to Carmella and Graves, and we encourage members of the WWE Universe to respect her and her family’s privacy during this extremely difficult time.
We’re all rooting for Carmella to brighten up our television screens once again in due time.
