From Stage Crashing To Brotherly Hate, Here Are 5 Of The Wildest WrestleMania Backlash Matches Ever

It's just a few days until WWE’s WrestleMania Backlash, and the event, which streams live on Peacock, Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, will be loaded with drama. Will Seth Rollins exact payback on Cody Rhodes? Will The Bloodline stand up to the challenge of RK-Bro and Drew McIntyre? Who will say "I Quit" first, Charlotte Flair or Ronda Rousey?

And which of these matches will go down in WWE annals as all-time classics?

Only time will tell! But until we have those answers, how about turning back the clock at look back at some of signature Backlash moments etched in WWE history?

Oh brother! In 2009, WWE saw a fierce sibling rivalry, with former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Hardy fighting big brother (and former tag team partner) Matt Hardy after the elder Hardy tried to sabotage his career, including shockingly hitting him with a chair at the Royal Rumble that year, costing Jeff his title. The two then squared off at WrestleMania with Matt emerging victorious.

They faced off again at Backlash in an “I Quit” match, which further proved that sometimes blood isn’t thicker than water; it’s just crueler.

During the legendary match, Jeff Hardy tied his sibling to a table and threatened to perform a leg drop off a ladder. Matt could only beg for forgiveness and declare "I Quit," which he did. But that wasn't enough for Jeff, who needed something more after his brother's betrayal. He came crashing down on Matt all the same, even breaking his hand.

The Undertaker and Batista were two of WWE’s biggest Superstars when they faced off at WrestleMania in 2007 for the WWE Championship. It was a riveting, back-and-forth match, but The Undertaker seized the title after delivering his signature Tombstone.

The Undertaker went on to defend his championship at Backlash, this time in a Last Man Standing match, and it was one for the books. Both went in with visible injuries and both came out even more beaten up.

The Undertaker unleashed a massive leg drop on Batista through the announcers' table. And then, most notably, Batista speared The Undertaker through the stage, which led the structure to collapse on both of them.

So, who won?  Well, no one and also kind of The Undertaker.

The match was declared no contest after the stage crash as both Superstars were unable to get up. So The Undertaker was able to keep his title.

And one year later, The Undertaker was still killing it in a legendary fight against Edge. The Undertaker had reclaimed his World Heavyweight Championship after defeating Edge at that year’s WrestleMania. 

Fair or not, Edge was able to score a rematch against The Phenom at Backlash, thanks to his fiancée, then-SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero. The match was a close one until La Familia members Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder swooped in and tried to help defeat The Undertaker. 

But the mythical Superstar could not be had. During the match, The Undertaker grabbed Edge in his Hell's Gate submission hold and wouldn't let go, even after the match was over. The Edge had to be taken out of the arena in a stretcher and transported to a local medical facility.

Triple H wanted to avenge his World Heavyweight Championship title loss after Batista beat him at WrestleMania in 2005. Batista’s WrestleMania win was a monumental one for him, as it marked his first World Heavyweight Championship win.

Following the defeat, Triple H claimed that The Animal must have merely "got lucky" vowing to beat him at Backlash.

However, Triple H was wrong; it wasn’t just luck. Batista beat Triple H once again and with a Batista Bomb to boot.

It was the convergence of two of the most legendary WWE Superstars of all time and it marked one of the greatest feuds in all of WWE history: The Rock versus “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

The two had their very first epic match at WrestleMania in 1999. The truly wild match featured Vince McMahon and then-Commissioner Shawn Michaels getting into a dispute over who had the right to appoint a referee. And after The Rock took out two referees during the match, Mick Foley even came into the ring to officiate. At the end of this back-and-forth affair, though, Austin delivered his legendary “Stone Cold Stunner” to seize the coveted championship. 

So, The Rock really wanted Austin in a rematch, which he got at Backlash, featuring Shane McMahon guest-refereeing.

This fight had everything and nothing was off-limits. The Rock hit Austin in the head with a fire extinguisher and into a chain-link fence; Austin choked The Rock with a cable. At one point, The Rock put on a headset to call Austin “trash.” But the climax came when Shane McMahon tried to swing the match in The Rock's favor, pouncing to hit Austin with his own championship belt, only for Austin to duck and watch The Boy Wonder connect with The Rock instead. He then gave Austin the double bird instead of delivering the three-count to seal "Stone Cold's" victory, prompting Vince McMahon to intervene and bring a new ref to the ring. Austin would go on to win, using the belt to deliver the decisive blow to The Rock and bringing this instant classic to an end.
