'I Feel Like We're Getting Close': Will There Be More 'Psych' Movies?

Now that the third movie in the Psych franchise has settled into fans’ collective memories, many are wondering if they’ve seen the last of Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez), Burton Guster (Dule Hill), and their intrepid band of reluctant crime-fighting friends. 

As a result, eager fans of the show are already looking ahead to the future and any potential new adventures for the team at Psych. 

Even though no one has officially greenlit Psych 4, the minds behind the franchise already have ideas for where they want to go in future movies (yes, plural) and would clearly jump at the chance to bring these characters back to the screen once again. 

Speaking to TVLine shortly after the release of the latest film, Psych 3: This Is Gus on Peacock, series creator Steve Franks explained that not only does he know where he wants to take the series, he insists on it getting even weirder. 

“Well, we have a lot of ideas,” he confessed. “We certainly know what we want to do in 4, and we know what we want to kind of do in 5, and then knock on wood, can we do 6?”

He added: “But now that we’ve done three of them, we’ve probably earned a chance to do a bit of a departure, just like we used to do on the series. Once or twice a season we would take a swing that was kind of ‘out there,’ and it would either land or not land — but when you’re doing 16 [episodes], it wasn’t as big of a deal. But I do think if you line up all these movies together at the end of the day, however many we end up doing, there should probably be one that stands alone on an island as our ‘Halloween III,’ where you’re like, ‘That one was weird.’ I feel like we’re getting close to doing that one.”

Meanwhile, Rogriguez, who co-wrote the latest movie with Franks, told Entertainment Tonight that he’s excited to see where the story goes after the third movie changed the game for these characters.

The third movie ends with Shawn and Gus unraveling the mysterious past of Gus’ now-wife, Selene (Jazmyn Simon). They were just in time too because she had just given birth to their first child. Now, Gus is a dad and Shawn is a fun uncle/godfather. Rodriguez explains that he’s excited to see how a child will impact everyone’s dynamic going forward.

“I definitely want to see Gus as a dad. I want to see all of his neurosis come on out. I want to see just how detailed he is about everything and how it drives everyone else crazy, especially Shawn. I want to see the interaction between Shawn and Gus because Shawn is definitely the godfather. He's the uncle, but he's probably going to be having way too much influence on raising up the child in the wrong way -- at least in Gus' mind, the wrong way," he said. "I would like to see what happens with Shawn and Juliet. Now that this is happening with Gus and Selene, will they have a child? Will they not? What does that mean for them? What does that mean for Henry? Having it realized or having it not realized.” 

He also explained that age will play a big factor in any fourth movie they do. After eight seasons and three movies, he’s excited to tackle the middle-age crises that Shawn and Gus may have, which is a place they’ve never been able to go before. 

Unfortunately, fans will just have to wait to see if the powers that be will greenlight another installment in the Psych movie franchise to see all the weird, wonderful ideas Rodriguez and Franks have in mind.
