Stephanie McMahon Announces Leave Of Absence From WWE, Promises To Return
Stephanie McMahon says she's stepping back from a majority of her duties as chief brand officer and in-ring superstar with the WWE to focus on her family.
Stephanie McMahon, the chief brand officer of the WWE, announced Thursday that she’s taking a leave of absence from the organization effective Friday.
The daughter of CEO Vince McMahon took to Twitter to make the surprising announcement. She did not offer any information as to how long she plans to be away and did not elaborate on the reason for her break from the WWE beyond simply saying she wants to dedicate some time to focus on her family.
“As of tomorrow, I am taking a leave of absence from the majority of my responsibilities at WWE,” she tweeted. “WWE is a lifelong legacy for me and I look forward to returning to the company that I love after taking this time to focus on my family.”
The absence of McMahon marks a significant loss for the WWE given that she’s been with the organization in various capacities for decades. In addition to handling business for the WWE, including launching the WWE Network in 2014, she’s been in-ring talent, often acting as an antagonist to various Superstars like the Bellas and even her father.
McMahon’s decision to take a step back and focus on her family may have something to do with her husband, fellow WWE Superstar and executive vice president, Paul “Triple H” Levesque. In 2021, he suffered a “cardiac event” and underwent emergency surgery. Fortunately, he has since made a full recovery. However, the incident forced him to announce his retirement from the ring in in 2022 ahead of Wrestlemania.
“I was nose-diving and sort of at the 1-yard line of where you don’t want to be really, for your family and your future,” Triple H explained during an appearance on ESPN’s First Take in March. “There’s moments in there when they’re putting you out for stuff and you think, ‘Is this it? Do you wake up from this?’ That’s tough to swallow and makes you think differently.”
The married duo share three children together: Aurora, 15, Murphy, 13, and Vaughn, 11. McMahon will now have a lot of time on her hands to spend with them and her husband as she begins this leave of absence from the WWE.
