A new season of “Love Island” is headed to Peacock (and USA Network!) in July, promising more steamy moments, high-stakes drama, and sexy singles looking for their shot at true love. Amid all the intrigue, though, many may forget that “Love Island” is, at its heart, a game show with a $100,000 winner at the end.
The show’s format is pretty simple. A group of singles enter a gorgeous villa in an idyllic location where they’re immediately paired off into couples based solely on their immediate physical attraction to one another. After that, it’s all a matter of showing their partner that they’re actually into them — because if someone chooses to break up with them and they find themselves not coupled, they can get booted from the villa.
Sadly, it’s not as simple as coupling up and staying together. New singles enter the villa periodically to tempt people into exploring something new. In addition, islanders will be put through various challenges and games that will test their connection as well as their physical and mental capabilities. Not only do they have to make sure their partner doesn’t want to uncouple with them and get hot and heavy with someone else, but they have to make sure the public tuning in six days a week thinks their love connection is genuine and worth sending them and their partner to the end.
See, unlike most other dating shows, the viewing audience gets a say in the action. Throughout the show, they’ll be given the opportunity to vote for their favorite couples and will ultimately have the final say in which one is given the $100,000 cash prize.
Season 4 promises to be one of the spiciest on American TV yet thanks to the streaming format. Jenny Grom, executive vice president of unscripted entertainment content at Peacock, noted that not being on cable allows the new episodes to get even hot and heavier.
“Love Island is a highly addictive dating format that is primed for a streaming service like Peacock where we can push boundaries and bring viewers steamy and dramatic twists,” she said.
“Love Island” Season 4 premieres on Tuesday, July 19 at 10:05 p.m. ET/PT on USA Network.
