'It's Fun Being The Young Guy': Harrison Burton Talks Being On 'Race For The Championship'
Harrison Burton is just happy to be a part of the crop of 2022 Cup Series drivers featured on "Race For The Championship."
All of the drivers on “Race For The Championship” have a lot at stake when it comes to the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series. However, few have as much pressure to perform as 21-year-old Cup Series rookie Harrison Burton.
Despite his age, Burton is a skilled driver on the track and has more than earned his position among the other 2022 Cup Series drivers. While the pressure of such a potentially historic run might get to some, he’s just grateful for the opportunity.
“It’s fun, it’s fun being the young guy,” he told USA Insider digital correspondent Stephanie Gomulka at the show’s red carpet premiere. “I remember being in late models and being the youngest guy. And then two or three years went by and then I wasn’t the youngest guy anymore and I kinda still wanted to be the youngest guy.”
He added: “I’m just trying to kind of enjoy that. It’s cool having the opportunity to be a rookie in the Cup Series and doing it at 21 is pretty fun, for sure.”
Although Harrison is no longer in contention to win the Championship, he was seemingly prepared for that outcome. Despite his age, he proved during a recent chat with Auto Racing Digest that he’s not afraid to be honest with himself and others about how much work he still has to do and how much he still has to learn.
“The first part of the year hasn’t gone how we wanted it to,” he said at the time. “There’s no denying that. There are no rose-tinted glasses for that.”
However, speaking at the “Race For The Championship” premiere, he seemed to feel like a winner just to be a part of a crop of 2022 racers who are having their lives documented for all the world to see for the first time.
Above all, he’s interested to see if people find their jobs relatable to his.
“Yeah, I think I’m probably the most excited to see what you all think about what we go through,” he said. “I’m really interested in what the fans do too. Everyone has jobs that are stressful, right? Or there’s moments at your job that are stressful and seeing how what we do is really fun and we’re really fortunate to be able to do what we do … But, at the end of the day, it’s still your job.”
He concluded: “So seeing how that relates to the fans, you see guys go through really hard moments throughout the year. Myself personally I went through really hard moments throughout the year. Just kind of relating that back to you all and seeing that, it’s cool to compare what we do.”
“Race For The Championship” airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on USA Network. You can catch more NASCAR content on Peacock right now.
