Watch Carly Pearce Dominate Boyz II Men in Barmageddon’s “Talk Derby To Me”
The superstar singers jockey for position in hilarious horserace.
Giddy up to the Ole Red in Nashville, where celebrity guests compete in the most outrageous bar games you’ve ever seen. This time, the TV reality game show Barmageddon takes inspiration from the Kentucky Derby, but instead of magnificent racehorses and mint juleps in silver cups, we have ride-on toy ponies and, well, beer in plastic cups.
Buddies Blake Shelton and Carson Daly have outdone themselves this time, recreating the “Run for the Roses” with a hairball turn and stands of celebrating spectators waving flags for their favorite teams. We bring you all the highlights as “Every Little Thing” singer Carly Pearce goes up against (OK, demolishes) R&B/Soul group Boyz II Men.
How does the game work?
Carly and one member of Boyz II Men each “mount up and take off” on power ponies down the racetrack, where they must grab an oversized horseshoe while navigating a tricky turn. At the end of the race, they must toss the horseshoe onto a hitching post until they hook a ringer. Then the game moves to round two, where Carly competes with another member of Boyz II Men. The first team to hook two ringers wins the round and one point. This episode is particularly challenging for the celebrities as there are no regular people teammates to share the load.
Who are Carly Pearce and Boyz II Men?
Carly may have a voice like an angel but she is one fierce competitor, on the Barmageddon racetrack and off. During her seven-year country music career, she’s won three CMA awards, four ACM awards, and one Grammy, which she shares with fellow country singer Ashley McBryde for their 2021 duet, “Never Wanted to Be That Girl.” Perhaps that’s why producers Blake and Carson had her compete against two Boyz: tenors Wayna Morris and Shawn Stockman.
Boyz II Men are no competitive slouches, either. The R&B vocal harmony group formed in Philadelphia in the early `90s and shot to fame with their Grammy award-winning debut album, Cooleyhighharmony. They continued to dominate the charts and break Number One records with tracks like “End of the Road” and “I’ll Make Love to You.” The three current members — Wayna, Shawn, and Nathan Morris — are now on tour but carved out time just for some Barmageddon pony riding.
Carly brings the heat
When the bugle blows, Carly and Wayna are off to the races, with Carly taking a wide lead. Could her horse — lucky number 7 — have anything to do with it? Though Wayna reaches the finish line last, the Boyz II Men singer hooks the first ringer, making him the ultimate comeback kid. In Round Two, Carly looks determined as she goes up against singer Shawn, and the Kentucky native ends up leaving him in the dust, prompting his band member Nathan to say, “Poor Shawn” from the sidelines. Carly quickly hooks two ringers while Sean is still trotting away on his horse.
It's always fun times across the board at the Ole Red, but how will “Talk to Derby to Me” end?
